Student Comments
Fall 2012
- Stephanie was a great lab teacher. She was always prepared and presented an example and positive presentation of the material. The labs were applicable to the classroom subject matter and were fun to perform.
- Stephanie made lab both fun and challenging. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in this class and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a future career in any health science or Biology.
- She was willing to do more than she was required to in order for me to get assignments completed on time. She seems to care about her students success.
- Stephanie was a good instructor. She knew her material and made visual PowerPoints with animations to help elaborate on what she was trying to get across.
- She did a good job of explaining the material. She always had our prelabs/notebooks back at the next lab. Very, very knowledgeable and excited about the material.
- The PowerPoints were easy to follow, especially the lovely diagrams.
Student Comment for Improvement
Fall 2012
- Didn't feel that adequate information was provided to prepare for exams.
- Grading on the labs (pre-labs/exams) are stricter than other TAs.
- Lectures were too long and did not leave adequate time to complete required procedures.
- Instructor was unable to give help due to lab policies.
Course Reflection
In reviewing my first student feedback, I have found that I have presented the material and myself adequately. Several students commented positively on the presentation and my enthusiasm. However, many students would prefer the lecture time was shorter. For future classes, I think I will emphasis that while lecture takes up half the lab time; students do have open labs to complete assignments. These are not optional times, but rather are provided because the course is designed with longer lectures. Also, it is department policy to encourage students to become self-reliant and to encourage critical thinking skills, so I was hesitant to give assistance when student should already have a grasp of the material. I see that the students need more help in this area and that I need to work to make them more at ease with the basics. A few students provided low marks on the evaluation for “TA is approachable” and “Goals/Expectation made clear”. I see that I will need to make efforts to improve this in future terms. I will reiterate my availability during the term.
